Talented entire No Doubt is the perfect example of the patience Anthony Cummings is willing to show his horses. Where some trainers may have pushed a horse prematurely or even had him gelded, Cummings was content to wait until the beginning of No Doubt’s four-year-old season before allowing this son of Not A Single Doubt to make his debut. The decision provided his owners with an instant return as he comfortably claimed the Mitchell Bell Maiden at Kembla Grange. A veteran of no fewer than five trials prior to his competitive debut, No Doubt has only really come into himself in the past few weeks, prompting Cummings to finally test his charge under race conditions.

No Doubt displayed pretty much “push button” behaviour from barrier rise, jockey Bobby El-Issa jumping him out smartly before the rangy entire responded to his rider’s command to come back underneath him when electing to hand up the lead. In running No Doubt travelled sweetly and turning for home he responded genuinely when El-Issa hooked him around the heels of the warm favourite Make A Ripple to set out after the leader Smiling All. From as far out as the 200 metres it was clear there would only be one winner as No Doubt ranged alongside Smiling All, full of running. If anything No Doubt may have hit the front a shade prematurely as he lay in marginally 50 metres out before being straightened, but it mattered little as he drew away to win by a cosy length and three quarters.

Plans for No Doubt are fluid, but the authority of his win and the expectation of improvement from his first raceday experience suggests the stable have yet another talented horse in the making.
