Provincial Flag Bearers hand off to Group 1 Hopes

Skyline Blush and Pincer Strike flew the flag for the Anthony Cummings stable on Saturday as both broke their maiden status in fine style. Adrian Layt piloted both and made the most of his hard work and early starts at Randwick over the last few months.

On a day where the stable was hoping to achieve similar success as in 2013 when Arctic Flight, Fontelina and Diamond Earth all won feature races at the stand-alone Scone meeting, Like Xena, Brettan and Vergara did not fare as well.

The Scone venture did provide one highlight as Prime Target, a bulging son of Oratorio out of the good producer Kidnappers, broke his maiden in the first event of the card, edging out his rivals in a close photo finish.

And while the stable was cheering for these three maidens, our focus turned quickly on to the Group 1 assignment of our favourite Fontelina. The Doomben 10,000 looms on Saturday as his next top-level contest and he is ready to fire. Despite his last start disappointment, and even with barrier 12 (not including the emergency), Fontelina's work leading in has been first rate. Young up-and-comer Tegan Harrison takes the reins and we are confident 'Fonty' will give his best once again.
