Cummings import produces Ultimate Shock

From Racenet

The five-year-old gelding was having only his second start in a race when lining up in the TAB Rewards Handicap (1000m) after a successful debut in New Zealand almost ten months ago.

In the time since his first start victory in a 1200-metre maiden at country Wairoa, Ultimate Shock joined the Cummings stable in Sydney before winning a barrier trial at Randwick on November 30.

With no exposed form in Australia and only one start to his name as a summer five-year-old, Ultimate Shock was kept safe by bookmakers, starting at $5.

And the price turned out to be more than generous as the son of Falkirk won with authority, coming from back in the field and scoring by 1-1/2 lengths eased up on the line.

The David Pfieffer-trained Corryvreckan ($91) grabbed second, a nose margin in front of You’re Kidding Me ($21) for Gratz Vella.

Stable foreman Edward Cummings said the manner of the win came as a surprise.

"I think he’s probably won a bit better than we expected today so we may decide to give him a greater test or keep him to this grade,” Cummings said.

"We keep learning new things about him all the time as you would probably expect.

"In a competitive environment he seems to put his best foot forward.

"We have to pay credit to the owner Andy Chiu who has made a habit of sending horses to us on an unusual breeding line but nevertheless ones that work very well – Thunder Fantasy, Aomen and Flashing Speed more recently.

"I noticed that the handicapper had rated him pretty low coming into today and that’s obviously worked in our favour so it will be interesting to see how they appraise his win.”
